What the Award is for and the Recipients
|
The Award is the first of its kind - recognizing the personal strength
and courage of children who cope with physical barriers and emotional
struggles in their young lives; and yet endure and forbear to be a
vibrant part of the school community and graduate from grade 8 and
grade 12.
|
The trials of adolescence are difficult enough for all. Imagine
what it would be like to contend with the ordeal of physical
obstacles and the emotional distress of being different and
knowing it - knowing you can't participate in sports and
games, but would love to. Imagine what it would be like
to have the constant thought in your mind "I don't fit in."
|
Recipients will include children, who like Nigel, have suffered
great physical setbacks. They have persevered to beat the odds
in overcoming their lifelong struggle with physical barriers
and the seemingly invisible but daily confrontation with doubts
about self-esteem.
|
Children who have lived through the spiritual and practical
hardships of a family death or severe illness are also
eligible for the Award. It is not so surprising that the
darkness of weighty grief can be lightened to some extent
by the positive reinforcement of recognition by their school.
